This Company existed from the late 1890s until 1944 and produced bricks and other building material for the extensive house building that was underway in Dublin at the time. Based on the Crumlin Road, the clay pits extended from Kimmage to the Canal at Goldenbridge.
The bricks were a yellow biscuit colour, the older ones had ‘Mount Argus’ imprinted, the more recent had ‘Dolphin’s Barn’ in the frog of the brick. Some also contained the initials ‘DBC’ - Dublin Brick Company.
This was a huge local employer, not only for brick makers, but also for the carters and associated trades such as groomsmen, saddlers and farriers. Ironically, the business ceased when the lands on which it was sited were compulsorily purchased to construct the large Drimnagh estate housing schemes. The Player Wills factory on the SCR was one of a number of buildings constructed of these bricks.
